The Mission
The backend infrastructure team enables fast, reliable product development at Fullscript by defining and upholding engineering standards for quality, scalability, and maintainability.
We own the long-term technical health of Fullscript’s core Ruby on Rails application and the experience developers have working within it. Through foundational upgrades, shared tooling, and cross-team infrastructure projects, we help product teams move quickly and build confidently as the company grows.
The Role
We’re looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead our backend infrastructure team.
This role combines people leadership, technical direction, and project execution. You’ll grow a strong team, set a clear roadmap, and guide decisions that improve application health and developer productivity.
You’ll stay close to the technical work through solution design, code review, and hands-on contributions where they’re most useful. You’ll also partner with engineering leaders and product teams to prioritize platform investments, coordinate changes, and connect technical improvements to business needs.
What You'll Do
-
Lead, coach, and develop engineers through clear expectations, regular feedback, career development, and performance management.
-
Build a team culture grounded in ownership, collaboration, learning, and technical excellence.
-
Own the team’s roadmap, balancing immediate developer needs, foundational improvements, and long-term application health.
-
Guide technical direction for our Rails monolith, improving code structure, maintainability, scalability, reliability, and security.
-
Lead foundational upgrades across Ruby, Rails, and related frameworks and dependencies, coordinating migration and release plans with affected teams.
-
Improve developer productivity through shared tooling, CI checks, testing infrastructure, documentation, and simpler development workflows.
-
Oversee shared application infrastructure, including feature flags, end-to-end tests, and infrastructure-as-code within the monolith.
-
Coordinate cross-team projects, making scope, ownership, dependencies, risks, and progress clear.
-
Partner with product engineering teams to resolve recurring technical problems and support adoption of shared tools and standards.
-
Define and track meaningful outcomes, such as faster feedback cycles, fewer recurring failures, and less time spent working around platform limitations.
How We Expect You To Think
-
Developers are your users. Understand their day-to-day problems and involve them in shaping solutions.
-
Platform work should produce clear outcomes. Connect investments to developer productivity, application reliability, and product delivery.
-
Standards work best when they’re practical, well explained, and supported by tooling that makes them easy to follow.
-
Modernization should be incremental and purposeful. Improve existing systems with a clear understanding of the benefits, costs, and migration risks.
-
Adoption is part of delivery. Documentation, communication, and support matter alongside implementation.
-
Strong people leadership creates technical ownership. Give engineers context, clear expectations, and room to make decisions.
-
Balance today’s commitments with tomorrow’s maintenance costs. Make tradeoffs explicit and revisit them as needs change.
What You Bring
-
Experience managing software engineers, including coaching, career development, performance management, and hiring.
-
Must have a strong backend engineering background with Ruby on Rails and experience maintaining production applications.
-
Sound technical judgment across application architecture, testing, performance, reliability, and security.
-
Experience leading platform, infrastructure, developer experience, or other technical work that serves multiple teams.
-
Strong project and program management skills, including coordinating dependencies, managing delivery risks, and guiding changes through rollout.
-
The ability to turn broad technical needs into a prioritized roadmap and communicate why the work matters.
-
Strong collaboration skills and the ability to build agreement across teams with different priorities.
-
Comfort moving between people management, technical guidance, and delivery, while helping engineers take ownership.
Bonus
-
Experience evolving a large Rails monolith or supporting high-scale web applications.
-
Experience leading major framework upgrades or migrations across multiple teams.
-
Experience improving CI pipelines, test suites, feature flag systems, or developer tooling.
-
Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code, React, Remix, or GraphQL.
-
Experience in e-commerce or health tech.
-
Experience thoughtfully applying AI-assisted tools to engineering workflows, with attention to code quality, security, and maintainability.
What We Can Offer You
-
Generous PTO and competitive pay
-
Fullscript’s RRSP match program for financial health
-
Flexible benefits package and workplace wellness program
-
Training budget and company-wide learning initiatives
-
Discount on Fullscript catalog of products
-
